In the United States, partner abuse, also known as domestic violence, has been found to be primarily a human and relational problem, rather than strictly one of gender or traditional social structures.  However, this may not be the case in the rest of the world, where research on this topic has lagged and attention has been on other concerns (such as famine and war) and other crimes against women (e.g., honor killings, genital mutilation.

This course examines findings from a comprehensive review of scholarly articles published in peer-reviewed journals and by government agencies providing quantitative data on physical, psychological and sexual abuse of intimate partners, as well as risk factors and consequences, in countries outside of the United States and other English speaking developed nations.  A total of 162 articles reporting on over 200 studies in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Europe met the inclusion criteria, from various types of samples.  Most of the studies reported on female victimization only, but 73 reported on both male and female victimization.

Results of a data analysis on these findings, focused on the relationship between prevalence of abuse, human development and gender inequality, are discussed.  A model for understanding the various causes of domestic violence, based on Nested Ecological Theory, is then presented, examining the relative importance of societal, relationship and individual factors.

This course is intended for mental health professionals, victim advocates, batterer intervention providers, educators, policy-makers, and anyone else interested in the subject of domestic violence.  This is an in-depth course and appropriate for individuals with an intermediate knowledge of the subject, but is also appropriate for beginners.  The course course consists of Power Point slides with narration, and includes printable tables and references.  The final post-test consists of 40 questions.

Learning Objectives.  At the end of this course, students will be able to:
